What are Spark Plug Wires?

They are also referred to as Ignition Wires because they are part of your ignition system. They deliver the electricity to the spark plug so that it can generate the spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture. They also play a vital role in the smooth operation of your engine. When a spark plug wire fails it can create so much resistance that the electricity never reaches the plug. Another problem is the insulation in the wire breaks causing the spark to arc outside the engine not inside where it’s needed.

When should you change your Spark Plug Wires?

There are typically only two reasons someone changes their spark plug wires. First is when the engine is running rough and misfiring. Secondly, when it is recommended by the manufacturer. Why do your spark plug wires fail?

Your spark plug wires carry high voltages on a consistent basis. That and they are exposed to high engine temperatures in a confined compartment. This can cause a baking effect on the insulated wire covering and the protective rubber boot.

Other conditions that can weaken the insulation on the wires are water, oil and gasoline vapors over long periods of time.
