Birkenstock invented the first flexible cork, deep footbed. It is modeled on the natural shape of a healthy foot. For optimal fit, Birkenstock offers two widths: Normal to wide width and narrow width for slender feet. The strap, footbed and toe grip are optimally matched to support the natural rolling movement of the foot. The relationship between the strap and the footbed stimulates a gripping reflex in the foot during each step which leads to a tensing of the toe and calves muscles, after which the muscles then relax again. During the action of walking this continual alternation between the tensing and relaxing of the muscles exercises the feet and legs and improves circulation. Furthermore, it firms the connective tissue and improves the “shock absorbing” characteristics of the sole of the foot. The combination of these design features ensures that the foot fits naturally and is supported properly, as well as improving the posture of the entire body which ultimately leads to an improved level of well being.
